History
Restorers began its work in January of 1997 through a series of conversations between the deacons of Madison Square Christian Reformed Church and different community residents who had approached us for assistance. As a church, we desired to change from an urban church that ministered to its community to a church that ministered with its community. In order for this to happen, there needed to be a new 'table' set which gives joint ownership to neighbors, churches and other area organizations who wish to make a difference together for our community.
Our mission statement is as follows: To show Christ's love by promoting long-term sustainable changes in families and neighborhood through unified committed relationships between community and church so that greater dignity and quality of life are achieved.
Based on this foundation, Restorers began to take shape, according to Isaiah 58:12, which says, "Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations. You will be called Repairer of broken walls, Restorers of streets with dwellings."
Our geographical boundaries were then set, (see Neighborhood Profile) intentionally small so that we could see the impact in a small area and grow from there. Our bylaws were created and indicated that no less than 50% of our board must live in the geographical area, and the other 50% must come from people who have a vested interest in our area (either church member of an area church, business owner, etc.).
We are currently partnered with the following area churches: Madison Square Church, Redeemer Lutheran, and Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church.
